Though Christmas and Valentine’s Day can certainly create their share of gift-giving storm and stress, Mom’s Day certainly ranks high on the list of holidays that can induce some extra-added heartburn when it comes to selecting an appropriate purchase. Whether we’re retailers needing to buy neither too few nor too many wholesale Mother’s Day gifts in bulk, or simply typically guilt-ridden sons and daughters, it’s never easy.
Sure, mother says we should save our hard earned money, and take advantage of those cheap closeouts or, really, not get them anything at all – but does she really mean it? We wouldn’t bet on it. Mother love goes bone deep, but moms are also humans who have made the greatest of ordinary sacrifices, but we all like presents. Still, what offering is sufficient for the woman who gave you the gift of life itself?
A lot of us settle for a nice card and maybe a box of candy. Is that good enough? No, said the actual mother of the Mother’s Day holiday, Ana Jarvis. Indeed, according to Wikipedia, she had this little guilt-trip to lay upon us good-for-nothing offspring:
“A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world. And candy! You take a box to Mother—and then eat most of it yourself. A pretty sentiment!”
Of course, try not sending or delivering your mom a printed card on the second Sunday in May and you’re taking a gigantic risk of hurt feelings and anger. Sure, mothers love nothing more than handwritten letters, but in many respects a card has become a required ritual offering that, in its way, says something even the most heart-felt Mother’s Day e-mail or, for the truly old-fashioned, faxes really cannot. (A note to ‘netheads and iPhone users: Mother’s Day Twitters are definitely not sufficient.)
Indeed, even mothers who insist that they “really don’t want anything†really do, in fact, want something. No one carries a baby to term and goes through everything involved in the care, feeding, and education of children without wanting just a bit of recognition. Even the mother of the supplier of wholesale Mother’s Day gifts wants something that doesn’t obviously come from the bulk closeouts pile. Something that, even if it’s very inexpensive, is in no way cheap. Something that shows you in fact, care – but don’t put yourself out, don’t spend too much money or time; mom knows how busy you are and really just wants you to be happy. Just come over and you really don’t have to stay too long — unless, of course, you prefer not to spend the rest of the year evading sharp glances from mom and guilty feelings of your own….Where were we?
Let’s face it, on this planet there is no force that matches the purity, beauty, and sheer damn-the-torpedoes single-mindedness that matches mother love. Just visit a soccer game or a school play and you can see the pride and power that goes with rearing a child. No child is so untalented he or she won’t get a positive review (constructive critiques optional) from mom. Go to the gossip pages and look at the most pathetic behavior on offer and somewhere, there’s a affectionate mother, either proud despite the opinion of the world or making excuses where no one else would. Sure, you may not personally have done something (or many things) truly awful or just plain dysfunctional. But if you did, you know your mother might scold you and become appropriately furious, but she would ultimately support you and even find a way to be proud of you. How can any gift possibly match that?
The answer is that wholesale Mother’s Day gifts or retail, discount or from Neiman-Marcus or Tiffany’s itself, there are no guarantees you’ll even come close to finding a gift that even begins to express the right feelings. Try anyway.
